EARLY POSTOPERATIVE WEIGHT-BEARING AND MUSCLE ACTIVITY IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE A FRACTURE OF THE ANKLE.
J Bone Joint Surg. 71-A: 23-27, 1989.

Fifty-six patients with displaced ankle fractures necessitating surgical fixation were randomly assigned to one of three postoperative treatment regimens: A) No plaster cast or weight-bearing; active exercises to the ankle, B) a non-weightªbearing plaster cast, and C) a walking plaster cast, for the first six postoperative weeks. At follow-up periods up to two years there were no consistent differences in the clinical results in the three groups. The time off work and the proportion with excellent or good clinical results were also uninfluenced by the postoperative regimen. No ill effects could be detected from walking before syndesmosis screws had been removed. It was concluded that none of the three postoperative regimens has any advantage over the others in cases with stable osteosynthesis of the ankle fracture.
